9 Reasons Why Unique Content is Essential for SEO

Unique Quality Content Is King!

That’s not exactly how the saying goes, but maybe that’s how it should go. To succeed online, your website should have unique, original content that helps your readers solve their problems and answer their questions.

Now, there aren’t a lot of topics that haven’t already been covered to some extent somewhere on the Internet. Chances are pretty good that every talking point in every post on your blog has already been talked about somewhere online by somebody.

9 Reasons Why Unique Content is Essential for SEO

So we’re not talking about topics that nobody else has ever covered on their blog. That would be nearly impossible unless you’re a research scientist or some kind of genius who can think of problems and solutions that nobody else on the Internet has ever considered. And if you did come up with unique content, it might not be that helpful. You probably wouldn’t get much search traffic by offering unique solutions to unique problems that nobody is searching for — makes sense, right?

Anyway, original content is merely content that hasn’t been plagiarized from somebody else’s work — and this includes spun content — don’t waste your time with that garbage.

This isn’t 2006!

Sure, you might talk about things that others have already covered, but you can do it in your own way and in your voice. And maybe you can put a unique spin on that tired old information that nobody else has thought about yet.

So, here are three solid reasons why you should avoid putting up duplicate content on your website and focus on publishing nothing but original material.

Here are 9 reasons why you should avoid putting up duplicate content on your website and focus on publishing nothing but high quality original content.

If you don’t want to take my word for it, take the former head of Google search’s webspam department, Matt Cutts.

1. Your Site Will Likely Be Penalized by Search Engines

Creating unique content is one of the greatest challenges many bloggers and marketers face.

It’s always tempting to just scrape content from other people’s sites and publish it on your own. That tactic used to work fairly well but today prepared to be absolutely destroyed in the search rankings.

Duplicate content is a real problem that can get your website penalized by search engines. SEO experts agree it should be avoided like the plague.

2. Plagiarism Isn’t Cool — And It’s Illegal Too

In case you didn’t know this: all content that you see on the Internet is considered copyrighted already.

According to Google Panda update in 2011, improve search results by filtering out low-quality sites, designed to reduce the rankings of sites that were low-value for users, copied content from other websites, or were not very useful.

Copying someone else’s content can lead to a DMCA takedown notice — this is very bad — which could sink your entire site in the SERPs.

But the content owner doesn’t even have to serve you a notice or report it to Google — he or she can sue you without warning. That can mean the end of your business, and if you aren’t incorporated to separate your personal assets from your business assets, it could cost you your home, all your money and all your possessions.

3. Original Content is More Successful in the Long term

But even with all these dangers like Google penalties, lawsuits and financial ruin, some of you still aren’t convinced. You’re desperate to make a living online, and if you have to take some risks, then so be it.

Is that your mindset?

If it is, then there’s a good chance that you are going to fail at Internet marketing and have to go get a real job before too long.

The secret to building a business that is successful in the long-term is to create value and share it with people, and there isn’t a whole lot of value in ripping off other bloggers and lying to your audience. That’s not going to work.

People want great content. That’s why they’re searching for the answers to their problems on the Internet. If you can provide them with real value in your own words — that’s good enough!

And if you need to borrow some ideas from some other sources, then do it and cite your sources too. In fact, linking out to authoritative websites whose content is related to your own is actually going to help you build trust with your readers and gains some SEO value in the process.

4. Original Content Gets Backlinks

Let’s face it, backlinks are the key to a strong SEO campaign.

Valid, natural backlinks are the truest backlinks of them all.

The only way to obtain natural backlinks from legitimate sites is to produce high-quality unique content.

More and more, surfers are looking to avoid being duped by fake news or fake product reviews by paying attention to cited sources. So website owners are often looking to back up their claims, ideas, or concepts, by linking to a source that validates the claim. This doesn’t have to be only in the medical field, it can be in any vertical. If someone runs a sewing site, they may claim that “knitting sweaters for dogs helps them sleep.” They may seek out a pet website that discusses this issue deeper and link back to it as a source.

These are the best backlinks you can get.

They are free, they are natural, and they are exactly as Google likes to see backlink profiles grow.

When you offer up great content, you put yourself in a position to be used as a backlink source. Websites with good reputations for high-quality content will often be referred to frequently by other big websites. However, if you only put up one or two good articles and the rest are junk, don’t bet on getting many backlinks.

Website owners commonly peruse the rest of the content for the sole purpose of preventing themselves from linking to a source that maybe bad quality.

5. Unique Content Fills a Void

When someone is searching on Google, they are searching for a solution to a problem, or more information on a subject.

The content that Google displays should fill that void. If it doesn’t, the content is likely dropped lower in the rankings to make room for content that does solve the problem.

When you create unique content, you are creating content that likely has a use for someone, somewhere.

Hopefully, we are talking about more than just an obscure person here and there, but you catch my idea. When creating a content schedule, it is better to look for unique angles and ideas on a subject rather than focus on mass quantity content production. Google will sense that your content is original and helps their search engine continue to be a place that exchanges ideas and offers up solutions to problems.

6. Google Will Trust Your Site

Trust takes time in any relationship and your website’s relationship with Google is no different.

We often discuss Google penalties for duplicate content, but what about when your content just isn’t good? Many website owners do the bare minimum, only avoiding duplicate content. They have content created, make sure it passes Copyspace, and then they post it and move on.

But if the content isn’t very good, you’re defeating the purpose because your content isn’t likely to rank for any relevant term or position. Unless you are trying to rank for a super low volume and unprofitable term, your content needs to be good so that Google learns to trust you.

In the beginning, Google will position your content lower in its SERPs, but over time, if you keep up the hard work, Google will trust you and suddenly, any content you create will get ranked in a healthy position.

7. Original Content Increases Time On Page Metrics

What’s the saying, “if you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times?”

That saying could easily apply to unoriginal content. Even if the content isn’t a complete copy of someone else’s, it will likely have that super familiar flavor to it and the reader will jump ship early in the text and go looking for something that has a unique perspective.

Google uses Google Analytic stats to help them with ranking your website. The Time On Page metric, which tells us the average time readers spend on your website’s page(s), is a critical data point. If people only spend a few seconds on your page, that tells Google that your content has some sort of issue and the experience isn’t very good for the reader.

Consumers of Google’s search engine are familiar with cookie cutter content, they’ve “seen it a thousand times.” If they sense your content is simply regurgitating content they’ve read before, they are likely to hit the back button. This will influence your Time On Page Analytics metric and Google will likely lower your ranking in their search listings.

8. You’ll Always Be Google Compliant

Let’s face it, every Google algorithm update is hyper-focused on content quality. Google’s Artificial Intelligence bots are always trying to learn new ways to sift through content and figure out which pieces of content truly matter to the web surfer’s overall experience.

When I hear the chatter of webmasters nervously awaiting a Google algorithmic update, I can’t help but wonder why they don’t just spend more time producing top-quality content? If you create great content, odds are, you will be looked kindly upon by Google’s infamous algorithmic updates.

Doing it right in the first place is a less stressful approach.

9. You’ll Be Copied Less

This is going to sound highly counterintuitive but stay with me for a moment.

Higher-quality content is more protected from content thieves. Look, the fact of the matter is, copying content straight up is just stupid. Everyone knows that. Your website is certain to get penalized over such matters. However, the art of “spin” is often deployed by website owners to “copy” your content without “copying” your content.

What I mean is, websites will attempt to copy your content in a way that’s just under Google’s radar. This is called “spinning content.” The thing is, when someone spins great content, their content will almost always be of less quality and less depth. This is because the writer of the “spin” doesn’t often know the subject well enough to get too involved. They also are trying to churn out content in an expedited manner leading to less effort on quality.

This means your high-quality content will always triumph in search.

Original text is essential for SEO

Creating unique and meaningful content means more than just being compliant with Google. It also means contributing to the greater good of the Internet experience.

When you create quality and avoid stealing other’s work, you pave the road for a quality business that can end up lasting you for the next two decades. Google’s artificial intelligence is learning on an hourly basis how to filter out the chumps. Invest in quality content and unique perspectives and put your business in the best position for long-term growth.
